Education

Perfect for Children whose one or both parents/grandparents speak Chinese, and who have some exposure to the language at home or in the community.

Characteristics:

  • Usually stronger listening and speaking skills compared to Non-heritage Learners of the same age;

  • May understand daily conversations but are not necessarily able to read or write;

  • Some can speak simple Chinese orally, but their grammar and vocabulary are incomplete;

  • Motivation to learn Chinese often comes from cultural identity, family communication, and heritage.

Example:
A Chinese-American child growing up in the U.S., whose parents speak Mandarin or a Chinese dialect at home. The child can understand some Chinese but mainly uses English in school.

Perfect for children who have little to no exposure to Chinese in their daily lives.

Characteristics:

  • Completely start from zero, with no listening or speaking ability, and aim to learn Chinese as a second language;

  • Motivation often comes from interest, academic credits, or college admission requirements (e.g., AP Chinese, language requirements);

  • Progress is usually steady and balanced, but requires more structured classroom input.

Example:
A child from an American family with no Chinese background, whose parents want them to learn an additional language, or who chooses Chinese out of interest in Chinese culture.

Uses official HSK curriculum, designed for Grade 12+ students and adult learners studying Chinese as a second language.

Characteristics:

  • Based on the official HSK curriculum, the program develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a progressive and structured way.

  • Suited for high school seniors, college students, and adult learners who study Chinese as a second language.

  • Helps learners achieve academic goals such as HSK certification, college language credits, or preparation for study and work in China.

Example:

A college student preparing for the HSK exam, or a professional working in a company where Chinese is used in daily communication.
